Who are we? The EUPI is a part of the Emory University School of Medicine’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. It is also an Accredited Training Institute of the American Psychoanalytic Association (APsaA).
Despite this impressive pedigree, the EUPI is not a household word in Atlanta. But we offer plenty that may make a difference in your life. The psychoanalytic institute makes its home in the inviting historic Tufts House located on the east edge of the Emory campus in the shadow of the medical complex, with its front door facing the adjacent Druid Hills neighborhood. The sunny classrooms house seminars for those preparing for careers enhanced by, or even immersed in, an in-depth knowledge of psychoanalysis. The institute provides an integrated curriculum of postgraduate courses as well as organized programs of clinical case supervision in psychoanalysis or psychoanalytic psychotherapy.
Prospective residents in psychiatry–read more about our distinguished and unique training opportunities in psychoanalysis: As a medical student applying to psychiatric residency programs, you may wonder about the advantages of matching at Emory. If you visit, you may decide that Emory psychiatry residents are an appealing group. Year after year, Emory’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences is able to select vivacious, well prepared, and highly motivated residents from its pool of applicants – the cream of the crop. A combination of factors makes this possible, but one important draw may surprise you. Emory’s department of psychiatry contains a fully accredited psychoanalytic institute. Institute faculty members—some of whom are also full-time faculty in the psychiatry department—serve the department by contributing to the quality of teaching and clinical case supervision provided to the residents.
As a psychiatry resident at Emory, you will learn valuable perspectives from our psychoanalysts, who will be among your teachers and mentors. As an advanced resident, you may decide to apply to the Emory institute for more intensive study of psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy. In an era when many psychiatry residency programs provide scant education in the principles of psychodynamic treatment and many psychoanalytic institutes struggle to survive, the unique collaboration between the Emory residency training program and the psychoanalytic institute offers clinical and research opportunities that are found in few other places.
